Day 7: Winter Activities

The 12 Days of Blogmas event will take place from December 9 – December 24. There will be a prompt for each weekday of the challenge. The prompts are based around the song “The Twelve Days of Christmas” and can be found below with a small description. Each day, you’ll create a post for your blog based on the prompt of the day. Then, you’ll come back to The Coastie Couple or The Petite Mrs to link up your post. After linking up, you’ll be able to check out other blogs who are participating. We do expect you to share the love with fellow bloggers that are participating in the event.

You can find graphics and other goodies for all of the prompts in the Facebook group, but I’m also going to list them here for those of us that don’t want to add another group to our list.

Winter around here gets so quiet and still, it’s as if suddenly time just froze. I don’t live inside a big hectic city. I’m on the outskirts of a suburb on a busy high traffic road next to two schools but otherwise-it’s been very quiet since we moved down the hill. Here’s a list of winter activities I have participated in or plan to before the Spring comes which isn’t until like April.
1. Build a snowman
2. drink hot cocoa and watch movies
3. sleddding
4. have a caramel apple
5. make paper snowflakes
6. listen to christmas music
7. wrap gifts
8. walk through the snow
9. bake cookies (in progress)
10. snow angels
11. building gingerbread houses
12. ice skating
13. buy puppies gifts for christmas
14. decorating the tree
15. sending/recieving christmas cards
So that’s it from me today! I kinda went super lax on today. I had plans and they fell through. Then I was gonna blog this morning and I slept in.  I woke up and had bad cramps. And now I am ultimate lazy person- so here you go and hope you enjoy! I’m off to bake cookies and hope they don’t turn to mush and come out looking delicious! (note: they looked great, although the bottoms were a little darker than I’d like)
XOXO

My absolute favorite part of the holidays next to parties, great cocktails, giving/recieving presnets and lost of food: are movies! I have seen well now, probably a whole lot!I watch a lot of lifetime movies, disney holiday features and tons of holiday specials on primetime so I have my fair share of Christmas movie knowledge. Romatic-comedies holiday style are my weakness this time of year and the ones with musicals in them. I watched the typical ones as a kid and I was usually very much around tv and I think we somewhat bonded our family around tv, when it wasn’t so much a part of everday life back in the 90s. I love when you can deeply relate to the christmas movies and the characters in them. I often pick out my relatives in the movies I watch and see how they act or speak the same type of way.  When they do something crazy like fall off a roof, electrocute themselves or knock out power on the block from lights- you just laugh and say, “Well hey! That could’ve been us!” and life moves on. Then I feel much more normal and I can learn to cope with the crazy season that much easier. So with that being said, here are the 6 movies that I can’t live without this Christmas season- popular, some classics and some sappy, all romantic.
*
1. Love Actually
From the makers of Bridget Jones’s Diary and Notting Hill comes the ultimate romantic comedy about love’s delightful twists and turns, starring some of Hollywood’s brightest stars.*

2. The Holiday
From writer/director Nancy Meyers comes a romantic comedy about two women on opposite sides of the globe who swap houses only to discover that a change of address can really change their lives.*

3. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
The comic misadventures of the beleaguered Griswold family continue in this latest “Vacation” outing, the third and most successful of the series.*

4. White Christmas
After leaving the Army after W.W.II, Bob Wallace and Phil Davis team up to become a top song-and-dance act. Davis plays matchmaker and introduces Wallace to a pair of beautiful sisters (Betty and Judy) who also have a song-and-dance act. When Betty and Judy travel to a Vermont lodge to perform a Christmas show, Wallace and Davis follow, only to find their former commander, General Waverly, is the lodge owner. A series of romantic mix-ups ensue as the performers try to help the General.*

5. The Family Stone
Chaos reigns when a son, intent on proposing to his uptight girlfriend, brings her home for Christmas and his entire family hates her, except for his off-beat brother, who is instantly smitten.*

6. The Mistle-Tones (abcfamily.com video link)
Holly (Tia Mowry) sets out to create her own musical group, The Mistle-Tones, after she loses a spot in the The Snow Belles to Marci (Tori Spelling).

You should totally put these on your holiday movie watch list if by any chance you haven’t seen them. They are sweet, endearing movies around family and the spirit of the holidays. Some of these I have literally been watching for years and The MistleTones is a musical and I really actually like it a lot. So enjoy your holiday festivities and begin with a cup of hot cocoa!

So I was about 8 or 9 when this happened but the story in my mind is clear as day. We went to our normal christmas trip out to my uncles house with our maternal side of the family. It was a very snowy weather year for Oregon- which was a little out of ordinary and made it a bit more nerve-wracking to get out to the countryside where my uncle lives. I always loved the ride no matter what it brought. So I tightened my seat beat for the bumps and slides on the way out, the sudden stop and go of it all. We visited with our family and had quite a feast per usual. All the kids excitedly opened a mountain of presents and everything was wonderful. We stayed extra late that year for some reason like late into the night and I believe it was about 11-12am before we got into my grandpa’s 12 seat vam and started to head back into town.
As far as I can remember, it was dark, very dark and pretty icy and my grandpa didn’t have chains but had studded tires and we hadn’t had a problem getting up there so.. Well my grandpa (still with all his driving abilities and quite a good driver at that) defrosted the windows and tightened us all in this sleeper van style 70s shag carpeted room on wheels. He pulls out of the driveway and starts to go out to the side road to get to the main road and PLUNK! Drives into a ditch. Now we call this “the Ditch story” because well it is, aka his new nickname for years my sisters called him this. He drove off the gravel and straight into a ditch-while still on his sons’ property. Yep, folks we hadn’t even left his driveway!
Me being only 8-9 yrs old didn’t understand why we weren’t moving and going home in the dark, wintery cold, snowy weather. My older sister finally said “we’re stuck” and that I knew would take a long time. I was lucky to be bundled up and just feeling so tired I think I fell asleep by the time we actually left the house. I know that since we were officially stuck on the mound of dirt and couldn’t get out/off of it my uncle had to come bring his huge 350 cherry red truck over to haul us out. That takes some time to hook us up and then to actually pull the vehicle out with a few attempted and failed tries.
I also remember while they were hooking us up and getting it all ready, the girls and I (my two sisters and her friend) were singing christmas carols or telling stories. Something to get our minds off how silly this all was. We couldn’t believe really that he had just driven into this unsightly hole in the ground. Of course to me it seemed like hours it took and it wasn’t but finally we were out and on the road. I was asleep with dancing sugarplums in my head and a sack in the back full of toys and things I’d wished for all year. I love being around family and such but it was hectic and an especially crazy, fluke sort of year. It’s a time we always remember and tease him (now in heaven) about and will never forget.
What was your most memorable year or event that happened around the holidays? Something funny? Crazy? Silly? Scary? Anything sad or upsetting? I hope you hold these memories precious in your heart- it’s what keeps those who’ve left us too soon, alive in our hearts forever…
